he was part of a massive match fixing scandal involving several players back in 2013. fixed some games back between 2010 through 2012. many players, including important ones, were given lifetime bans from ever playing for club and country. some players got off and got lesser sentences. zelaya, who was seen as a promise to salvadorian football at the time, only got suspended for a year. the scandal completely set the country back in the sport. the real issue is that then ex captain of the country alfredo pacheco, who at the time held the most caps for the country, was one of the few who were willing to help the federation and investigation to who bribed the players and all of that. the investigation took years to finish, but pacheco was abruptly murdered in 2015 with there being no culprit found to this day. many salvadorians believe there was a hit put on him so that he wouldn’t say enough to authorities to reveal potentially everything. many theorize that the players who were punished had a say in this, thus zelaya as well. zelaya also had just failed to reach his potential in his career. scores goals yes, but never really bled the jersey whenever he player for the national post-ban. very selfish, doesn’t work hard on the pitch, and just unlikable in general.
